Large Area Solar Simulators

Solar simulators that simulate sunlight over larger target areas (in the scale of 1 m × 1 m or more) have become an essential and important requirement for many research and industrial usages. Depending on the customer requirements, Sciencetech Large Area Solar simulator systems employ xenon short arc lamps, LEDs, or metal halide lamps as the basis of the illumination system to mimic solar illumination.

Large Area Solar Simulator Specifications

Sciencetech Large Area Solar Simulators are often designed from scratch to accomplish customers’ exact research or industrial requirements. Below are some of the most requested specifications met by Sciencetech large area solar simulators:

·       Variable illumination areas up to 5 m × 5 m

·       Class AAA solar simulation (according to standards such as ASTM, IEC, JIS, MIL, etc.)

·       AM0, AM1.5G or other specialty spectral matches

·       Various degrees of collimation, depending on customer requirements

·       Stepwise/ continuous irradiance attenuation

·       Multiple mounting options, in varying orientations, including ceiling-mounted

·       Installation inside specialized locations at customer request

Large Area Solar Simulator Applications

Sciencetech's Large Solar Simulation Systems could be used for several purposes. Some applications they have been used for previously include:

·       Testing large solar panels

·       Incorporation into wind tunnels and climatic chambers

·       Use in the automotive and railway industries

·        Use in the military and/or aerospace industry

Large Area Solar Simulators Comply with Well-Known Standards

Sciencetech Solar Simulators reproduce the sun's irradiance according to:

·       ASTM E927 - Specification for Solar Simulation for Photovoltaic Testing

·       IEC 60904-9 - Solar Simulator performance requirements

·       JIS C 8912 - Solar simulators for crystalline solar cells and modules

·       IEC 61215 - Crystalline silicon terrestrial photovoltaic (PV) modules - Design qualification and type approval

·       IEC 61646 - Thin-film terrestrial photovoltaic (PV) modules - Design qualification and type approval

·       US Military Standard MIL-STD810

The SLP series of solar simulators are a highly flexible, highly customizable design that utilizes a light pipe to homogenize the beam. Available in AM0 or AM1.5G spectral matches as standard (select at the time of ordering), this system can be configured for additional spectral filtering, including custom filters.

The COL variations focus on high collimation, the HOM variations on best spatial non-uniformity, the HF variations on high irradiance, and the LA variations on the most efficient large-area coverage. Each version can be modified to balance the most critical features. Please contact our sales team for more information about modifications and accessories.
