A Brief Overview


Spectroscopy is the study of the interaction between matter and radiative energy of different types (electromagnetic, acoustic, ion flux, etc). When we do not specify the nature of the radiative energy, we are talking about optical spectroscopy - the interaction between matter and light.

Historically, spectroscopy originated through the study of visible light dispersed according to its wavelength, by a prism. Later the concept was expanded greatly to include any interaction with radiative energy as a function of its wavelength or frequency.

Modular Spectrometers and Monochromators

A spectrometer separates incoming light by wavelength in order to measure a property of that light. Modular spectrometers allow the user to adjust several facets of their system, such as wavelength range or resolution, to find the best fit for their application.

A monochromator separates incoming light into its component wavelengths, selecting only a very narrow bandwidth of interest to output. Spectrograph separates incoming light into its component wavelengths for recording and analysis.

The beam-splitter consist of very fine parallel aluminum lines spaced 4 µm apart on a thin mylar substrate. It has a manual wavelength selector dial with an optional external motor drive for computerized control. The compact design is made possible by its Seya-Namioka optical layout, using a single holographic concave grating and f/3.2 aperture. A pair of removable fixed-width slits are included for the input and output ports. Several removable fixed slit width sizes are available to choose from ranging from 100 μm to 3 mm width. Additional removable slits and custom width slits can also be purchased separately.
Mirror coatings have been chosen for this model to enhance performance in the UV-VIS region.

9072S is a small 1/8m scanning monochromator. The 9072S uses plane gratings 30mm x 30mm in size and utilizes a Czerny Turner optical configuration. The 9072S is designed to be used with single channel detectors or connected to another 9072S to form a double additive or subtractive system. The base 9072S system has a triple grating turret which is computer controlled. 4-grating turret is optional.

Gratings and Grating Holders (120-8512) are sold separately.
The 9072S is compatible with SS80 and SS84 adjustable slits and SS-F fixed slits. Comes with the adjustable slit.

The optional external light source port upgrade provides both a motorized turning mirror and the flange for the input port so that users can couple external light sources (e.g. glowbar, Gunn diode, synchrotron) into the SPS-300. The motorized mirror switches inputs between the SPS-300 internal mercury lamp and external light source. Additional optics and chambers may be required to focus the external light source into the SPS-300.

Sciencetech manufactures grid polarizing beam-splitters for use in the far-infrared and terahertz spectral regions. These beamsplitters divide the incoming beam according to its polarization. The beam-splitter consist of very fine parallel aluminum lines spaced 4 µm apart on a thin mylar substrate. It has the widest spectral range with a higher frequency cut-off than that of other polarizers that work in the near-millimeter wavelength range.

In the 9072DS, the grating in the second monochromator is arranged such that it reverses the spectral dispersion of the first monochromator. This leads to a spectrally homogenized beam at the output port of the second monochromator and greatly reduced stray light, ideal for spectroradiometry, Raman or UV measurements of solar radiation.
The arrangement of the 9072DS allows it to act either as a tunable bandpass filter or a tunable notch filter. Arranged as a tunable bandpass filter the bandpass of the device is determined by the width of an intermediate slit. When arranged as a tunable notch filter the width of the notch is determined by the physical width of an opaque notch placed at the intermediate slit position.
The 9072DS can also be used to pass or filter out several selected wavelengths by using a custom intermediate multi-slit mask instead of a single width intermediate slit.

One SS-80 slit is included, which can be attached to either the input or output port. A second slit can be added to the order if desired.
The fixed intermediate slit or notch filter is not included in the 9072DS and can be selected from any of Sciencetech's SF-series of fixed slits and added to the order. A custom multi-slit mask can be added to the order upon request.
