Monochromators and Spectrographs

Grating for use with 9040, 9490, and 9150 monochromators (including imaging, single, and double monochromator configurations). A grating holder is included with each grating, compatible with the grating mount. Gratings cannot be removed from their holders once installed, the grating-holder combination can be removed from the grating mount in the monochromator.

Grating size options for the 9040, 9490, and 9150 series are:
64 × 64 mm
84 × 84 mm
102 × 102 mm

For single monochromator configurations, please select one grating. Additional gratings can be purchased to cover different wavelengths.
For double monochromator configurations, please select a quantity of two identical gratings. These gratings must be the same for the double monochromator configuration to operate correctly. Additional gratings can be purchased to cover different wavelengths, if purchased in pairs.

The 9040DX is a Double Additive or Subtractive design of the half meter 9040. Special care has been taken to design the system to minimize and eliminate stray light whenever possible.
A double subtractive monochromator operates to create a monochromatic light source by the 2nd monochromator cancelling the dispersion caused by the 1st monochromator. This allows a Double Subtractive system to operate as a tunable notch filter for Raman applications. The double additive is used for improved resolution. The 9030DS consists of two 100 mm scanning monochromators placed in series in subtractive mode. Bandpass is determined by the width of an intermediate slit, but the 9030DS has a net output dispersion of zero because the monochromators are optically coupled so that the dispersion of the second grating cancels that of the first. This leads to homogenized wavelengths at the output port - there is no spectrum, only a single undispersed slit image - which allows the unit to act as a tunable bandpass or notch filter.

Stray light of all sorts is drastically reduced in a double monochromator, and in the 9030DS it is further minimized by the use of concave holographic gratings. It is ideal for applications where stray light is a problem - where there may be a strong scattered background, such as in spectroradiometry, Raman or UV measurements of solar radiation.

The 9030DS can be used as a tunable notch filter to remove one particular wavelength while allowing all others over the bandpass to pass through, making it an ideal instrument to pre-filter out the strong laser excitation wavelength in a Fluorescence or Raman system so that the weaker output signals can be observed.

The 9030DS is a fully integrated unit with the two diffraction gratings coupled mechanically for accurate positioning, adjusted manually using a thumb-wheel. A variety of fixed slit widths is available. It can be upgraded to be motorized and controlled by a computer with the 9030 Motorized Upgrade. Only one motor and drive unit is required for both monochromators, enabling control via Sciencetech Sci-Mono Active-X library or full featured Sci-Spec software.

The Model 9030DS can also be used to pass or filter out several selected wavelengths by using a custom intermediate multi-slit mask instead of a single width intermediate slit. The 9030DA double additive monochromator consists of two 9030 monochromators placed in series. Stray light is drastically reduced in a double monochromator, and in the 9030DA it is further minimized by the use of concave holographic gratings. The inbound light is dispersed by the first grating and again by the second. Both gratings rotate simultaneously in the same direction, and in the DA the monochromators are coupled so that the dispersion is double that of a single 9030 monochromator. Bandpass is half of the corresponding 9030 monochromator for the same output slit, and resolution using a 100 µm slit is 0.4 nm. Mirror coatings have been chosen for this model to enhance performance in the UV-VIS region.

The 9030DA can be upgraded to be motorized and controlled by a computer with the 9030 Motorized Upgrade. Only one motor and drive unit is required for both monochromators, enabling control via Sciencetech Sci-Mono Active-X library or full featured Sci-Spec software.

The Sciencetech 9030 monochromator is a compact, single grating, scanning monochromator with 100 mm focal length (both output and input). It has a manual wavelength selector dial with an optional external motor drive for computerized control. The compact design is made possible by its Seya-Namioka optical layout, using a single holographic concave grating and f/3.2 aperture. A pair of removable fixed-width slits are included for the input and output ports. Several removable fixed slit width sizes are available to choose from ranging from 100 μm to 3 mm width. Additional removable slits and custom width slits can also be purchased separately. Mirror coatings have been chosen for this model to enhance performance in the UV-VIS region.

There are 5 grating choices (sold separately) covering from UV to near-IR; choose a UV to VIS range to pair with the UV-VIS mirror coatings on this model. The 9030 monochromator cannot be used as a spectrograph and therefore only accepts single channel and PMT detectors at its output port. However, it can be used as an excitation wavelength tunable light source. The 9030 is Sciencetech's most economical monochromator with a manual control wavelength selector and removable, fixed-width slits. The input and output ports are purposely placed optically in-line, making it a simple addition to a straight line beam in an optical system. Being a scanning monochromator, it does not have a flat output field and hence cannot be operated as a spectrograph with a multi-channel detector mounted at the output port.

In the 9072DS, the grating in the second monochromator is arranged such that it reverses the spectral dispersion of the first monochromator. This leads to a spectrally homogenized beam at the output port of the second monochromator and greatly reduced stray light, ideal for spectroradiometry, Raman or UV measurements of solar radiation.
The arrangement of the 9072DS allows it to act either as a tunable bandpass filter or a tunable notch filter. Arranged as a tunable bandpass filter the bandpass of the device is determined by the width of an intermediate slit. When arranged as a tunable notch filter the width of the notch is determined by the physical width of an opaque notch placed at the intermediate slit position.
The 9072DS can also be used to pass or filter out several selected wavelengths by using a custom intermediate multi-slit mask instead of a single width intermediate slit.

One SS-80 slit is included, which can be attached to either the input or output port. A second slit can be added to the order if desired.
The fixed intermediate slit or notch filter is not included in the 9072DS and can be selected from any of Sciencetech's SF-series of fixed slits and added to the order. A custom multi-slit mask can be added to the order upon request.
Gratings and grating holders are not included. The 9072DS accommodates 30 × 30 mm gratings, with up to three gratings per turret. Two of each selected grating must be purchased to fill both monochromators. One grating holder is required for each grating.

In the 9072DA, the inbound light is dispersed by the first grating then passed through a fixed intermediate slit where stray light is rejected and then spectrally dispersed again by the second grating.

The double dispersion of the double additive monochromators results in a doubling of the dispersion of a single monochromator, leading to better optical resolution. The bandpass is half that of a single 9072 monochromator.

9072S is a small 1/8m scanning monochromator. The 9072S uses plane gratings 30mm x 30mm in size and utilizes a Czerny Turner optical configuration. The 9072S is designed to be used with single channel detectors or connected to another 9072S to form a double additive or subtractive system. The base 9072S system has a triple grating turret which is computer controlled. 4-grating turret is optional.

Gratings and Grating Holders (120-8512) are sold separately.
The 9072S is compatible with SS80 and SS84 adjustable slits and SS-F fixed slits. Comes with the adjustable slit.
It includes Sci-mono software for basic wavelength control. Our fully-featured spectroscopy package, SciSpec, is sold separately.

For applications requiring better signal to noise, reduced stray light and better resolution than the standard model a double additive model (9072DA) is available.

9055DXi is a motorized double 0.25 m monochromator that can be configured as additive or subtractive. The imaging option 9055DXi uses toroidal optics to compensate for astigmatism inherent in Czerney-Turner type monochromators and spectrographs. Double monochromators have the advantage of extremely low stray light levels by virtue of using two gratings. An intermediate slit between the two units, used to define the wavelengths that pass to the second unit, also masks off light scattered within the body of the first unit. In double additive operation the 9055DX effective focal length (0.5 m), dispersion, and resolution (1.7 nm/mm and 0.09 nm with a 1200 l/mm grating) are doubled compared to a single unit, making this mode useful where high resolution is important. In double subtractive operation there is no dispersion in the output beam and only a single slit image appears at the output instead of a broad spread of spectral images. This allows the system to operate as a tunable bandpass or notch filter.

This system includes two manual slits (one input and one intermediate). Motorized upgrades and additional slits may be purchased separately. Gratings also need to be purchased separately, with a minimum of 2 gratings required for the system to operate. An imaging 0.5 m monochromator/spectrograph. It has an f/8 aperture and a 2D flat field output for multi-channel use. It has a nominal resolution of 0.1 nm. Special toroidal mirror makes additional astigmatism correction. This spectrograph provides superior image quality. The unique layout with toroidal mirrors is optimized for minimum coma while allowing high throughput and minimum stray light and vignetting. The 9057i model supports up to three 50 x 50 mm gratings.

It Includes a Sci-Mono, a Windows based software module with a simple graphical user interface for controlling Sciencetech stepping monochromator wavelength selection. SciMono is provided free of charge with a Sciencetech motorized monochromator when SciSpec software has not been purchased. Sciencetech Software (Sci-Spec) is available at an additional cost. This upgrade is for Sciencetech's High Resolution line of monochromators, including the 9040, 9490, and 9150 (for both the single and double pass options for those systems). It moves the output port from the front of the monochromator to the side or lateral position. This allows different orientations of the system in relation to various sample chambers or detectors, and may be required depending on the size of the detector you are using due to the close proximity and limited space between the input and output slit on the front plate.
Please note that this upgrade does not allow both output ports to be used; it only moves the default output from the front of the system to the side. If you require both output ports be usable, please see DPOUT-HI products.

This is an upgrade to Sciencetech's High Resolution monochromators, including the 9040, 9490, and 9150 (for both the Single and Double Pass configurations of these systems). It moves the input slit from the default position on the front of the monochromator to the side or lateral position.

The Sciencetech 9057F is a fast 0.5 m motorized Czerny-Turner monochromator (and spectrograph) with an f/5.9 aperture. This is a "faster" model with larger optics for higher light throughput compared to the standard 9057 with f/8 aperture. Both models utilize a computer controlled motorized turret for automatic grating and wavelength selection. The regular 9057 model supports up to three 50 x 50mm gratings whereas the larger optics 9057F model supports up to two 64 x 64mm (clear aperture) gratings.
