Large Area Solar Simulators

Solar simulators that simulate sunlight over larger target areas (in the scale of 1 m × 1 m or more) have become an essential and important requirement for many research and industrial usages. Depending on the customer requirements, Sciencetech Large Area Solar simulator systems employ xenon short arc lamps, LEDs, or metal halide lamps as the basis of the illumination system to mimic solar illumination.

Large Area Solar Simulator Specifications

Sciencetech Large Area Solar Simulators are often designed from scratch to accomplish customers’ exact research or industrial requirements. Below are some of the most requested specifications met by Sciencetech large area solar simulators:

·       Variable illumination areas up to 5 m × 5 m

·       Class AAA solar simulation (according to standards such as ASTM, IEC, JIS, MIL, etc.)

·       AM0, AM1.5G or other specialty spectral matches

·       Various degrees of collimation, depending on customer requirements

·       Stepwise/ continuous irradiance attenuation

·       Multiple mounting options, in varying orientations, including ceiling-mounted

·       Installation inside specialized locations at customer request

Large Area Solar Simulator Applications

Sciencetech's Large Solar Simulation Systems could be used for several purposes. Some applications they have been used for previously include:

·       Testing large solar panels

·       Incorporation into wind tunnels and climatic chambers

·       Use in the automotive and railway industries

·        Use in the military and/or aerospace industry

Large Area Solar Simulators Comply with Well-Known Standards

Sciencetech Solar Simulators reproduce the sun's irradiance according to:

·       ASTM E927 - Specification for Solar Simulation for Photovoltaic Testing

·       IEC 60904-9 - Solar Simulator performance requirements

·       JIS C 8912 - Solar simulators for crystalline solar cells and modules

·       IEC 61215 - Crystalline silicon terrestrial photovoltaic (PV) modules - Design qualification and type approval

·       IEC 61646 - Thin-film terrestrial photovoltaic (PV) modules - Design qualification and type approval

·       US Military Standard MIL-STD810

Sciencetech has designed and manufactured many large solar simulators and other large area illuminators for special (typically research) applications. Please contact us today to discuss your needs sales@sciencetech-inc.com

Sciencetech's XE-LUM Luminaire is a low cost solution for researchers requiring large areas of illumination with good spectral matching but do not require high levels of spatial uniformity. The XE-LUM includes a 1.6 kW Xenon arc lamp and efficient collection reflectors. At a working distance of 50cm an irradiance of 1 Sun AM1.5G sun level can be achieved with an illumination area of 50x50cm. The area of illumination is up to 1.0 m x 1.0 m with a working distance of 1 meter.
The XE-LUM can achieve better uniformity when paired with multiple units in an array to flood the illumination plane.

The stand is an accessory that is sold separately. The XE-LUM can be arranged for vertical or horizontal illumination. In either configuration, the Luminaire can be rotated through 360 degrees in both sagittal and tangential planes.

Electrical Requirements: 200 to 240 VAC, 12.1 to 9.0 A.

This system includes 1 IEC 60320 C19 compatible power cables. Region-specific version must be selected at the time of placing an order (see product 491-9003).

Please speak with your authorized Sciencetech technical sales staff member for larger illumination areas, different spectral matches, or to have other customized options for this system.

A system of 4 LASI units. Each LASI unit illuminates up to 0.5 × 0.5m with a filtered xenon short arc lamp producing 6,000K illumination.

Non-uniformity is not tested, and typical values are quoted.
LASI units are tested for spectral match compliance to ASTM E927-19 AM1.5G class C and temporal instability compliance to ASTM E927-19 class A.
LASI units include one high-quality 1.6 kW xenon short arc lamp per unit purchased.

Each unit includes an integrated single-phase power supply with a touch screen interface that requires 220 VAC. Systems can be operated remotely through Sciencetech PowerControl software. C++/ Python control is possible with an additional SciencetechCOM module. Labview control is possible with additional SciAX module.

In certain applications a single LASI may be used on its own. However, LASIs are best used in arrays of multiple units, as the optical performance improves when the light from multiple units overlaps.

LASI units have a mounting flange but do not include a stand to hold the LASI unit. LASI units can be operated vertically (facing downwards) or horizontally. Please see stand options to select the illumination direction. See the brochure for additional product information and available accessories.

Power requirements: 200-240 VAC, 12.1 to 9.0 A per unit.
